Women, men, and children need access to information on health care to make informed choices. The APAI Declaration acknowledges that access to information is instrumental to fostering access to education and healthcare, gender equality, children’s rights, a clean environment, sustainable development and the fight against corruption.
Governments, civil society and the media have an obligation to facilitate women’ s equal access to information so that they can defend their rights and participate in public life. Civil society organisations should be encouraged to make the best use of access to information mechanisms to monitor governments’ fulfilment of commitments to further gender equality, to demand the enhance delivery of services targeted at women and to ensure that the public funds they are entitled to actually reach them. The collection, management and release of information should be gender disaggregated.
